Total Bike Handlebar

A conceptual project for my graduate thesis. With the boosting bike market during the pandemic, I wanted to find a business opportunity in the industry. After my initial research, I decided to reimagine the bike handlebar interface.

In 2020, with the onset of the global pandemic, the options for exercise narrowed down as the indoor gyms and studios shut down. Bike sales went up by 75% compared to 2019 as more and more people got back on the saddle to get outdoors and work their muscles.

Increase in bike sales during the pandemic

The U.S. cycling industry overall saw sales reach $1 billion in April, up by 75% year over year, according to market research firm NPD Group. In June, bike sales increased 63% compared to the prior year, with particular strength in high-end offerings, NPD Group reported.

To be able to do all the above mentioned activities, bikers need products and equipment. And this behind the scenes is pretty cumbersome and ugly looking something like in these pictures.

The devices are small scattered and display information in a manner that seems like you need a second person decode it. And you cant even see what you’re capturing while using most of the action cameras.

Visualizing the in-ride data in a new form

 

Would you ever drive a car with something that looks like the displays on the left? Then why does a bike ride information need to look like its a code?

We also enable them to set and track goals in-ride so they are constantly motivated to achieve them

Redefining Convenience

Since everything can now be controlled via one channel, riders can keep their hands locked on the bars, phone safely put away in their pockets and don't have to worry about fiddling with multiple things during the ride.

At the end of the ride, the module can be unplugged from the handlebar and charged easily inside the home, so you that they don't have to worry about a power source in the garage

It is as cool as your bike

Other than sleek, aerodynamic form, We also took the liberty to design these overmolded silicone grips for ergonomic comfort

Because when it comes to self expression, colors cannot be underestimated. Hence, we want to offer the grips in multiple colors so that the handlebars don't look like an after-thought and instead the riders can choose how to best sync the aesthetics to complete the look of their bikes.

We will use prepreg carbon fiber for the handlebar and injection molded polycarbonate body for the module.

 

OLED touch screen for better battery life and brightness.

Combined with Corning Gorilla Glass that is finished to reduce sharp reflections and improve daylight visibility.
